House rules that feel kind, not cold

House rules do not need to feel strict or unfriendly. When they are written with warmth, they help your au pair understand your home, your children and your expectations.

Start with the reason behind the rule

A rule feels kinder when the reason is clear. Instead of only writing “no phone during meals”, explain that meals are important family moments and that the children need attention at the table.

Separate must-haves from preferences

Some rules are safety rules. Others are family preferences. Make it clear which things are non-negotiable, such as allergies or door safety, and which things are simply how your family likes to do things.

Use warm, direct language

Write in a way you would speak. Clear does not have to mean cold. Short sentences, examples and a friendly tone are usually easier for an au pair to understand than formal rules.

Review the rules together

Do not just hand over a document. Walk through the rules together and invite questions. This makes the document feel like a shared guide instead of a list of complaints.
